Anne’s Weekly e-Letter » Controversial healthcare system documentary may help spread awareness
Posted on Monday, May 21, 2007

Michael Moore, a filmmaker known for several controversial documentaries, revealed a new film at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19. The documentary, called Sicko, focuses on the ills of the US healthcare system. As with most of Moore’s documentaries, he looks at problems in the system and highlights those that have been negatively affected as a result of the problems. On the other hand, his film may raise the level of consciousness regarding the importance of getting involved so that positive changes can be made to improve the system. The film is scheduled to open in the United States June 29th. Although the film has not yet been shown in the US, it is drawing a great deal of controversy from the government, as well as the insurance and pharmaceutical industries.

I will see the movie when it comes out and make my own decision on its value. As a nurse and case manager, I expect there will be a lot of questions from friends and relatives who see the movie because healthcare affects all of us in one way or another.

The movie’s release was intentionally planned to coincide with the developing 2008 Presidential campaign. Healthcare should be one of the most important topics all of the potential candidates discuss as they travel the country and offer their positions to gain YOUR vote.

Healthcare is a hot topic for the campaign trail for many important reasons. We have more than 48 million people with no healthcare insurance living in the richest country in the world. Our country spends more than 15 percent of the gross national product on healthcare and every one of us has a stake in the industry. It is also a hot topic because the system is at its tipping point. We cannot hide from this any longer and it will take all of the brainpower in the government and experts in the system to come up with a solution that will be fair and balanced for us all.

What can you do? As experts in the field, we have an obligation to offer ideas, solutions and support. Find out when a presidential candidate will visit your area and go to the meeting. Write a list of questions and make sure they are submitted to the organizers. Each idea is worth consideration, so don’t be shy. Also, offer your assistance if the candidates want to know more about how healthcare works in your area. Take the time to share your successes and your outcomes. If we do, we can begin to make changes to the system that will be a win/win for all.

Have a good week!
