Move Around on Long Flights to Prevent Blood Clots

New research from the World Health Organization shows that about 1 in every 4,500 air travelers will develop a blood clot. They’re most likely caused by passengers not moving around enough. Listen to the story from NPR on tips that you can use to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

New Guidelines Refine Heart Attack Treatment

The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology released new guidelines for treating patients with chest pain or heart attacks. The two-pronged approach suggests that stabilized patients receive a stress test and other tests of heart function as well as preventive therapies, and that high-risk patients receive early intervention treatment. Healthcare-Associated Infection Prevention Expert Panel

A state-funded study found that hospital-acquired infections in Massachusetts add as much as $473 million a year to healthcare costs. The study recommends increased reporting for Massachusetts hospitals on infection data for hip and knee replacements, and for central venous catheters in intensive-care patients. Language Barriers Affect US Pharmacies

New research found that almost half of the 128 Milwaukee-area pharmacies surveyed could not communicate with non-English-speaking customers. The study found 46 percent of the pharmacies could mostly or always provide non-English information materials and 36 percent could mostly or always provide non-English communication. Forbes

Webcast on Mold: Current Thoughts and Practices

The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc, (AAOHN) Hosts A Webcast on Mold: Current Thoughts and Practices. The date of the webcast is August 15, 2007, at 2 p.m. EST. Participants will receive 1.0 nursing contact hour. The cost of the program is $50 for AAOHN members and $75 for non-members who register online.

This webcast will offer an industrial hygiene approach to recognizing and evaluating mold problems of non-industrial indoor environments. Participants will learn the basic characteristics of mold elements, their ecological benefits, and how they have become to be perceived as hazardous agents. The presentation will detail scientifically-sound methods of assessing mold problems, discuss common methods of characterizing potential exposures to individuals, and describe generally recommended remedial response strategies.

The webcast will be conducted by Rene R. Salazar, Ph.D., CIH. Dr. Salazar holds an undergraduate degree in microbiology, and masters and doctoral degrees in Public Health from the University of South Florida, College of Public Health, where he serves as adjunct faculty. As a Certified Industrial Hygienist and President of Salazar Consulting Group, Inc., Dr. Salazar provides consulting services in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene. He specializes in recognition, evaluation and control of biological agents common to non-industrial indoor environments, and his research interests focus on evaluating mycotoxin production by molds found growing on common indoor environmental substrates.
