Filling a Critical Need: NY Nurses Become Educators

The Greater New York Hospital Association’s Gap Program is helping nurses who have bachelor’s or master’s degrees become clinical faculty or preceptors — so they can fill the gaps in university nursing school faculty and allow more students to enter nursing programs. CMS Updates End-of-Life Rights for Medicare Patients

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has issued new regulations updating and spelling out the rights of terminally ill Medicare patients in deciding their end-of-life care. New language in the regulations say patients who go into hospice care can participate in their treatment plan, refuse treatment, select their own physicians and receive pain control. Health Officials Seek To Reduce Premature Birth

Health officials have begun an unprecedented effort to find out why one in eight U.S. babies is born premature and to develop a strategy to stop the trend, which has increased for the past two decades. A major focus will be on late preemies — those born only weeks before their due date — since there are indications that the rise in these births may be due to unnecessary Caesarean sections. Hospitals Making Progress on MRSA

More than 75 percent of infection control experts surveyed report that their hospitals have taken additional steps to prevent the drug-resistant superbug methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the past year. The steps include staff education, aggressive hand-washing, increased use of protective gloves and gowns, and targeted screening. Weight-loss Plan for Diabetics Works Long-term

A follow-up study has determined that a weight-loss plan devised by researchers at the Joslin Diabetes Center is still effective for type-2 diabetics even one year later.
