Sharing the Gift of Quota

Last week I attended the conference of the volunteer organization Quota International, to which I belong. I learned about Quota from a friend in 2005 and decided to join as a way to give back to my community.  Over the past three years I have worked with a group of dynamic women and men who have shown me how empowering it can be to participate in service projects for those in need. It is a true learning experience for the recipients as well as those providing the service.

As President of our local club, I was selected to represent my group at the International Conference in San Jose, Calif. Going to my first International was an eye-opening experience and brought the mission of Quota into clear view.

I gleaned new meaning of the organization’s mission as I listened to the dynamic speakers and various club members from around the world share stories of their service projects and how they impacted the lives of those in need. The creativity and the sense of community shared by so many individuals from diverse cultures around the world was both empowering and motivating.

If you are looking for a way to give back to your community, take a few minutes to review the Quota website. Here you will learn about an inspirational woman named Wanda Frey Joiner, who started the organization in 1919. I also recommend that you check out the page that describes some of the service projects clubs from 14 countries have conducted this past year to help persons in need.

To understand the mission of Quota, take a few moments to consider the words of the Quota Collect. This short poem, written in 1942, is recited at each club meeting to remind members about the mission of Quota:

Quench in our hearts, O Lord, all fires of selfishness,

Unfold to us the joys of true friendship,

Open our minds to a better understanding of service,

Teach us the real meaning of sharing,

And help us to hold high those principles of Quota for which we stand.

If you are looking for a way to give back to your community, take a few moments to check out Quota International. Feel free to contact me if you would like more information.

Have a great week!
