I wanted to take a break from “work” this week and ask you what has been on your summer reading list. This is a great time to catch up on all the books that you have been putting off. It also gives you the opportunity to recharge your batteries.
I discovered a new writer this summer and have been devouring her books. If you have not read Jodi Picoult, she is definitely worth checking out. So far I have read two of her novels. I find them to be true escapes, but full of messages that leave you thinking.
My Sister’s Keeper is my most recent find. Many of her books will be of interest as they are medically oriented. As I got into the book I was surprised by the detail that Jodi was able to cover amid the fact that it was a bestselling novel. The book contains a great deal of medical terminology as the story focuses on one of the characters who was diagnosed with leukemia. The author handles the topic well and explains the treatment options accurately and clearly. She also did a great job of describing the emotional side of what a family goes through when they learn of the diagnosis and attempt to navigate the healthcare system. There are a good number of twists and turns in the book, and the end is a real shock. Her latest book, Change of Heart, was also great. If you would like to view a short video that gives a glimpse into the book, check out her website here.
Another of my favorite writers is Luanne Rice. I have read two of her books recently – What Matters Most and Last Kiss. Both were excellent, but What Matters Most was like taking a trip. Reading the book takes you to a far away place that has quite a history. The author explains the culture and the landscape in such detail that you really could envision the area as well as the people in the story. Last Kiss was based on the characters from one of her earlier books, Beach Girls. If you love the shore, you will love both of these books.
A new resource that I have started to use this summer is the public library. One day my husband asked me why I didn’t get my books at the library, and I realized that I didn’t have a good answer. So I decided to visit our library and get a new library card and see what was in store. I was pleasantly surprised to meet the helpful staff at the desk who explained how to use the computer and how to reserve books online. Now I have the system down pat. Just as I am finishing one book, my next book is on the reserve shelf and ready for pick up. Best of all it is free!
Now you know what I’ve been reading. What about you? E-mail me at allewellyn@contexomedia.com and I will share your recommendations with all in next week’s post.
Happy reading!
